In 2003, I decided to get back into competing. It was the first year figure was held at a national level (officially) and it was open, so you didn't need to qualify. I decided give it a try it, as well as 80 other girls that year1 There were 33 girls in my class and to say the least I was lost in the shuffle. The week after that I went to the western Canadian naturals and placed 2nd. So felt I had redeemed myself. Three months later I place 1st in my class at the BC provincials. Feeling confident, I trained hard all year for the Canadian nationals, only to not place in the top 15 again. I was crushed. That's when I decided I needed help, I started looking for a trainer who could help me get the results I needed to place well. That's when I came across Sandra. I had met her at the Kelowna show and found her to be very friendly and helpful. So when she offered to train me I was pretty happy!
Training with Sandra has gone really well. She has given me all the support and encouragement that I needed and kicked me in the butt when I needed that too. They really work closely with you tweaking things each week as you go along. Even though I'm 14 hours away, it works out perfectly.
Since training with Team Wickham I have now placed 3rd at the Canadian Nationals in 2005, 2nd in the Canadian Nationals in 2006 and my best showing to date, 3rd at the North Americans in Cleveland this year.
Now our plans are for me to get 1st place in the tall class at the Canadian nationals and turn pro!
Sandra helped me with everything from my diet, to my workouts, to my posing suits, to my hair, and she made my most recent competition an exciting event that I will never forget. Thanks to Sandra, I now realize that fitness is not about being “skinny,” but about developing a strong and healthy body. I can’t wait to see what next year brings—and the year after that, and the year after that! Fitness is a lifestyle, not a short-term commitment, and I’m sure Sandra will help me achieve my long-term goals.
Thanks, Sandra! You’re the best!
"I have always been interested and have been working out since I was 14, however I never seemed to get
the results I worked so hard for. 6 months ago I ran into Sandra at the gym and she mentioned competing in figure.
It didn't take long for me to decide I was going to go for it. I knew that in order to get on stage in a bikini
I would have to work hard and challenge my discipline; exactly what I wanted! When I
decided to compete, I did it not only to transform my body, but to fulfill the need of putting my efforts and hard work
into something knowing there would be a noticeable result. I knew I wanted to be able to look back
at my hard work and be proud of what I accomplished. Over the past 6 months I have had a lot of fun training with
Sandra. She is extremely personable and makes the training and dieting exciting through her website, weekly chats and
posing sessions. She has a tremendous amount of knowledge in all aspects of competing and has a very natural way of
motivating people. When I am training with Sandra, I want to eat and train the best I can not only
because of my expectations but because that is how Sandra trains; she sets a great example.
This experience has been so great. It is an awesome feeling to know that I was able to accomplish what I did
over the last 6 months and I know if I keep training it will only get better. It is comforting to know that I have a trainer
who is always looking at ways to improve my physique and knows what I need to do to get there." -Krista Fleishauer
"I became interested in weight training at 18. I did the best research I
could on my own, finding out everything I could on fitness and nutrition.
When I was 22 I met Sandy and now I am REALLY learning what it takes to
train hard, to go for your goals, and to live a life focused around fitness.
I started out with Sandy barely being able to do a somersault (!!!) and here
I am after a year of working with her and I recently placed 2nd in my very
first fitness competition!! Once I got a taste of that stage now I cannot
WAIT to be up there again!
I couldn't have done it without her, Sandy is amazing! Her persistence,
motivation, dedication, and encouragement brought me to where I am. The
knowledge and experience she brings to the table are unmatchable. Her
accomplishments are truly inspiring!"
"What do you have to lose? That's what I told myself when I was thinking
about competing. The answer was 'nothing - except weight'. I don't lift
weights 7 days a week and I don't do 2 hours of cardio every morning. I
lift 4 days a week and cardio is never 2 hours long for me. It's not the
weights and cardio that are the challenge - anyone can handle that part.
It's the nutrition that is the hardest but it makes the most impact. It is
especally difficult when your friends are not 'dieting' and they don't
understand why anyone would want to do what you are doing - trust me, they
will get used to it and they will soon have your cheat days memorized! Here
are some comments and suggestions I have about the nutrition aspect of
preparing to compete that come from my experience:
1. Buy a good cooler you can carry on your shoulder - it will be your new
best friend.
2. Be prepared for people to object to your 'diet' and be prepared for
people to ask lots of questions.
3. Build a support team of people who understand why you want to compete
and the steps it will take to get there.
4. Never let yourself run out of food and always have your food prepared in
advance - otherwise you will find it hard to stick to your plan.
5. Be prepared to eat every few hours.
6. Stick with it! It's difficult somedays but it is definitely worth it.
You will get used to it. Like a quote that Sandy gave me says 'Nothing
tastes as good as lean and mean feels' (Michael Colgan)"
-Lindsey Liposvky-
If you have the desire and the will to change your body-Go for it! You will get alot more out of
competing than a physical transformation. Once you have your goal determined, don't let anything
sway you. There will be days when you feel you would do anything to be off the diet but never lose focus.
Food will taste just as good after the competition. Strengthening your perseverance, discipline,
willpower, physical and mental strength will only make you a stronger person in life. One of the sayings I used
to encourage myself was this
"God gave me food-I will use it to strengthen my body.
God gave me my mind-I will use it to decide what to eat.
God gave me my body-only through him are things possible."
