Knitting For Peace

While away for my last competition, I picked up a book called "Knitting for Peace". In it are dozens of charity organizations that knit for the needy worldwide. One that really struck me the most was an organization called "Hugs for Homeless Animals". They knit, collect and distribute "Snuggles", blankets for cats and dogs at homeless shelters. Their website is http://www.4h4a.org/snuggles

So, how can you help??

Well, if you knit, I can send you the "Adopt-Me Blanket" pattern from the book, you can use a design of your own, or you can also make 8 x 8 kniited squares that we can then sew together to make blankets!

OR if you don't knit you can still help us out! Do you have a sister, mother, mother-in-law or grandmother who knits?? It's very likely that anyone who knits has leftover odds and ends of yarn from different projects laying around. We can use those!!!! If you can gather donations of yarn we will gladly accept them. Or if that someone you know who knits would like to make an 8 x 8 knitted square to donate, you could then bring (or send) it to us.

Since the colder weather is upon us already, we'd like to get as many blankets distributed to the seven shelters in the lower mainland that accept 'Snuggles' as possible. This will be an ongoing project, however, we'd like to get a bunch distributed by December 1st.

If you'd like to help out just send me an email to contact@sandrawickham.com! As it says in the book, let's "make the world a better place-one stitch at a time!"

Whales Revenge

Team Wickham would like to encourage you to visit this site, www.whalesrevenge.com that is trying to get a million people to sign a petition to stop whaling.

You can go to the site and sign the petition in the box in the right corner.

They also provide a ton of information and links to other sites as well. AND you can pass it on to your friends-hopefully we can make an impact!

My Sister's Closet

Team Wickham cleaned out their closets for a good cause!!!

There is an organization in Vancouver called Battered Women's Support Services who provide counselling, support for victims of abuse, as well as providing training and education on violence against women. They have a a thrift boutique called "My Sister's Closet", where battered women can get vouchers for free clothing and household items. Our team is going to be helping them out by donating our unwanted things. If you live in the lower mainland area and would like to add to our donations just send me a PM or email me at wickham@sandrawickham.com. It costs nothing while at the same time helps us clean out our own closets!! You can see more information on the BWSS organization and My Sister's Closet here: www.bwss.org/programs/mysisters_closet.htm

Forgotten Felines

Team Wickham helped out some local furry felines with donations of toys, food, blankets, towels and more!

There is a shelter for cats here in British Columbia called "Forgotten Felines". You can check out their website at www.forgottenfelines.ca

Forgotten Felines is an independent Animal Rescue Organization that focuses on saving abandoned, sick, or injured animals. It caters to street cats and aims to stop helpless, innocent cats from being put to sleep and adopts as many cats out as they can. They have a "shopping list" of things they need at the shelter.

Our team is going to collect items to take out to the shelter. If you are from the lower mainland of Bristish Columbia and would like to contribute, just send me an email at contact@sandrawickham.com. If you are not from our area, you can donate below through Paypal and we will use those funds to buy items on the shopping list.

There are some very small inexpensive items (even plastic bags and paper towels...) that will still help them out. I think my cats will be willing to give up some of the cat toys they don't play with...or if you're a big cat lover like lots of us are, feel free to get whatever you want on the list!!

OUR SHOPPING LIST

Dry cat food,

Wet cat food,

Pellet litter,

Scoopable litter,

Blankets and towels,

Cat beds and toys,

Carriers,

Cleaning supplies including bleach (non-toxic, more natural variations if possible to protect the cats), Bounce, laundry soap, garbage bags, shopping bags, paper towels, mops and buckets, etc.

Free the Children

Our first project was working with an organization called Free the Children, to put together school kits and health kits to be sent to children overseas. When I brought this project to our team, my intention was to have each team member buy one or two items in the kits, and we would put one or two kits together. My team members however, surprised me by offering to buy entire kits (or more than one kit!) themselves! So our team put together 10 school kits and 5 health kits.!!! If you are interested in sending school kits or health kits, here is more information including the inventories for both: This organization was started by two young brothers in Ontario. If you would like to see more information about the brothers and this particular organization, visit www.metowe.org and www.freethechildren.com
Free The Children is the largest network of children helping children through education in the world, with more than one million youth involved in our innovative education and development programs in 45 countries.
